CHINA GOLDEN WEEK 2020

Golden Week and how it affects trade

China Golden Week starting from 1st October till 7th October causes production lines throughout China to come to a complete standstill as they celebrate “Golden Week” to commemorate the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Due to the Golden Week, online retailers, bricks-and-mortar retailers and logistics personnel involved in trading with China starts planning their shipments ahead of time. This is because during the entire week, except for emergency workforce, neither factories nor offices are open. Furthermore, public life (administration and co.) is jeopardized, containers with goods are packed in the ports, ships are neither loaded nor unloaded, and customs only work to a limited extent.

As a result, businesses trading with China faces strains on capacity and rise on prices of ocean, air, and road freight. The carriers are also overbooked, risks of cargo getting rolled increases and the containers carrying goods are required to get rescheduled leading to delays.

How to prepare shipments for Golden Week

Precise planning and implementation of certain thoughtful measures with reliable partners is essential to avoid being caught up with delays.

If you’re shipping via ocean or air freight and want your cargo to arrive on time, then all your shipments should be booked prior to Golden Week especially:

• Sea freight shipments bookings should be made at a date at least three (preferably four) weeks before the start of Golden Week. This means that the transport date and route should be fixed at the end of August/beginning of September.

• Air freight shipments should be booked at least one week before Golden Week.

• Most importantly transport mode should be chosen wisely as the fastest way is not necessarily the best way, as prior to Golden Week, transport services with the shortest transit times are quickly becoming over-booked and the risk of your cargo getting rolled also increases.

As more than a competent freight forwarder, we understand that utilizing any new mode of transportation for shipping goods can be daunting and hence we offer a clear comparison of different modes of transportation for a full door-to-door or door-to-port service. Our services also include price and transit time comparison along with the advantage of shipment tracking from the moment your order is placed to final delivery.

When shipments are managed through a single platform, it makes it easier to analyze which freight would be the best option, and having such overview of your supply chain surely helps in reducing stress at uncertain times such as these.

We can help you manage your post-Golden Week shipping schedule, fluctuating volumes and rates to and from Asia during this one –week closure in China.
